Re: Do you Remember Growing up Poor?
We were so poor growing up, we used to wait for the neighbors to bring home KFC, then go over and lick THEIR fingers!

In the UK it is a legal requirement that any discussion of this topic should include Monty Python's classic "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch. So here it is.

Yes, I did grow up in a poor family- I can remember at about 6 years old, we could barely afford milk, so when we didn't have any, I used to imagine the 'snap, crackle' and pop', of a bowl of Rice Crispies, WITHOUT the milk! It was loud, too!! Back then, nobody could even afford to 'pay' attention!!

Nothing wrong with being poor.... Makes you really appreciate things and life when you make something of yourself..... Yes I grew up poor but I had four sisters that kept me in line and taught me the real values of life....

Funny thing is we never saw it as poor, or thought of ourselves as poor.

Re: Do you Remember Growing up Poor?
I think some people look at being poor because they didn't have the 'niceties' that other families had back in that time, and, cripes, IF we got a box of Apple Jacks, that was like Christmas to us, and probably some others would look at it in that respect, too-Hard telling, not knowing-All I knew back then was my aunts and uncles grew alot of vegetables, canned and shared with neighbors and around Thanksgiving time, we went to my grandmother's house for dinner, and anybody that could use a nice, hot, meal, was invited, as alot of folks that worked in the woods, or the railroad, didn't have alot of money to throw around-And REAL mincemeat pie was a real treat, IF we had it once a year at Thanksgiving, and yes, REAL deer meat and raisins were used in the making of one of the most delicious pies in the world, to me, anyway- The newest car in Aroostook county in northern Maine in 1960 was a '47 Chevy, or an altered Ford pickup truck with no doors on it, for use in the woods skidding pulpwood logs.....

Re: Do you Remember Growing up Poor?
Poor is sitting in a dark house with the electricity turned off and gathering up discarded bottles to cash in for two cents each in order to purchase pinto beans cooked over a small fire built in the back yard in order for my sisters and I were able to have something to eat for the day...... Been there done that and candy was nothing that could be found only when invited to a friends birthday celebration... Not complaining, it is what prompted me to make sure that my children never had to endure the life of being poor.

Re: Do you Remember Growing up Poor?
I wouldn't be surprised at that, because a few people in my neighborhood in Maine were always going to the store with 2-3 cent bottles, and they went to the local dump to rummage around looking for them, and brought them home in the old apple baskets, just for a small box of macaroni, and IF they were lucky enough, a quart of milk......

Re: Do you Remember Growing up Poor?
I remember the first time my mom brought home pop tarts as a treat from the grocery store. My father made her take them back because he said we couldn't afford them.

Ya, I know, Kevin ! I didn't realize how little we had. There was really no one to compare ourselves to, since most people were in the same boat us we were. It was the times.
